100 Quilts for Kids

It’s almost that time of the year!! Summer (or winter, depending on where you live in the world) is just around the corner, and that means it is time for the annual 100 Quilts for Kids charity quilt drive.  I hope you will join me July 1- September 30, 2013 and make a quilt or two for a child in need.

100 Quilts for Kids Quilts

[quilts collected in 2011 from DC Modern Quilt Guild members and friends]

If you have been reading Swim, Bike, Quilt for a while, you know that charity sewing is important to me, and a portion of my sewing time and blog are devoted every year to encourage others to do the same.  There are so many great charities and sewing circles out there–if you don’t know where to donate your quilt, try one of these; Bumble Beans Basics, do.Good StitchesProject Linus, the work done by Sarah and her Quilt Ministry, and Siblings Together.  This year, you can also donate a quilt to tornado victims in Moore, Oklahoma (see the icon below for more details).

It has been exciting to witness the time and love that has gone into making the hundreds of quilts donated in 2010, 2011, and 2012. Ready to get started?

Make a quilt or 2. Donate it to a child in need, locally if you can.

Donate your quilt(s) to an organization in your community–consider donating your quilt(s) to a local foster care program, domestic violence center, homeless shelter, children’s hospital, local military family support organization, or to one of the organizations listed above.

Donate your quilt(s):  Let us know you donated your quilt (and where you donated it) by sharing a link to a blog post, threadbias account, facebook post, or picture on flickr from September 28-30, 2013 (here at www.swimbikequilt.com).

For you: It’s that easy!  I am working with different shops, companies, and pattern designers to put together some prizes that you will be eligible for when you donate a quilt–a fun way of saying “thank you” for sharing your time, talents, and resources with kids in need.

Sponsors: If you are interested in sponsoring the event/donating a fabric or quilting related prize, please contact me at swimbikequilt at gmail dot com.

Check out the 100 Quilts for Kids Flickr Group, and please spread the word to family and friends via Pinterest (consider pinning the 100 Quilts logo), Facebook, Instagram (#100quilts4kids), Twitter, or Facebook.  And please plan to join us for a 100 Quilts for Kids Quilt Along (pictures and pattern coming the first week of July).  Thanks so much!

Information on 100 Quilts for Kids in 2010:

Aunt Spicy and I were thrilled to spearhead 100 Quilts for Christmas in November and December 2010. Our local guild, the DC Modern Quilt Guild, teamed up with a local LDS congregation to make and donate 43 baby and toddler size quilts to the Alexandria Office on Women.  We were inspired and impressed with the efforts and generosity of others, and were grateful to help harness the terrific potential for good in the online quilting community by encouraging quilters to make baby (or slightly bigger) quilts for children in their own communities. Overall, over 130 quilts were donated to children in need.Aunt Spicy and I wanted to thank everyone for participating, and highlight a few people who donated prizes or really ran with the idea and made it their own:

Does it count if the quilts go to the parents of a dead baby? I’ve started an organization, Bananas for Annie, that makes quilts for the moms of babies they’ve aborted for fetal or maternal health reasons and would love to gain a little bit of traffic from your site! We’re on Facebook and would love some more likes! =)

That is really wonderful of you. Hugs to all those moms.
