The Quilt Cake // Favorite Things

Last evening, the DC Modern Quilt Guild hosted a Fabric Party at DelRayFabrics.  (Great selection, great prices, and I think I am going to have to go back to buy the purple echino cameras I was coveting. I need to learn how to make myself a bag, first). I was pretty amazed that we could fit 35-plus people into the space, and even more amazed that anyone could hear well enough to have an actual conversation. We were a lively and happy bunch, and loved having so many new people join us. My friend D made the most awesome quilt cake you have ever seen, complete with mitered corners, a modern pattern, and accompanying spool and thread. It was even more delicious than it looked, and that is saying something. (D also made my sister’s wedding cake last year.) She was the hit of the party, and not even able to make it. Enjoy the pictures!

If you haven’t heard, I’m having a giveaway that closes the 26th–to celebrate a year of blogging here, 100+ posts, and my baby girl’s first birthday!

Wow, that sounds like so much fun and that cake is amazing!

Here are two great (and free!) bag tutorials you might want to check out. They’re pretty easy too!

I’ve made them both and the first one especially is a really great size.

So cool. I’m not in DC now, but I will be this winter, and I hope I can make it to some DC modern quilt guild meetings!

I’m also trying to do a ‘memory quilt’ cake for my mom’s 80th this month and have been testing various options – is there a chance that your friend could give me pointers on creating this quilt? i’m battling to do the quilt and then transfer it to the cake (mine will also be draped over 2 layers of a square 3 layer cake)?

Katie nobody could really help me at the time so I tried for almost 6 months to get it right – I ended up using rice paper as a base to design the ‘quilt’ on and then transferred this to the cake – it was ingenious even if I say so myself. This was my first cake with fondant etc here’s a link to my cake :)
