4th of July along the Potomac // The Great Outdoors

A quick note to say Happy 4th of July!!! Two years ago, my friend Tricia decided that when we all had bikes and bike trailers and our babies were big enough, we would use our bikes to escape the heavy traffic/crazy metro and have a lovely evening watching the fireworks. We planned to park at the airport, ride our bikes down the Potomac until we came to an open, nearly deserted clearing, enjoy good conversation and fireflies and not a little bit of sugar, ooh and ahh over the fireworks across the river on the National Mall, get on our bikes, ride home, hit little to no traffic while hearing no crying (but a little bit of whining) and get our kids in bed all before 11pm. Voila. The stars aligned. This is exactly what happened. Two photos from my phone almost capture the happy, laid back, even lazy evening. (Well, lazy for me. I did not have to pull any kids in a trailer or on a trail-a-bike. I won in that lottery... I just rang the bell on my bike non-stop as we weaved in and out of pedestrian traffic!) A perfect end to a busy holiday weekend.
