Cross Roads Block // Tutorial

IMG_96231.jpg

Today I am happy to share a tutorial as part of the Sew Red for Women Blog Hop.  Leah of Burgundy Buttons organized the Sew Red for Women blog (and blog hop!) in order to call attention to heart disease and raise money to fight it. Heart disease is the leading cause of death of women in the United States, and affects individuals, families, and neighborhoods.

According to Leah's blog, over 80% of heart disease is preventable--take a minute to take the American Heart Association's My Life Check   (I actually took the survey, and was not at all surprised to learn that I need to eat healthier. I was, however, surprised how much it impacted my "healthy heart score," since everything else was on track.) Thank you, Leah, for working to raise awareness about heart disease, and for inviting me to participate in the blog hop.

And now, on to the tutorial!

Supplies:
Fabric A: 2 strips 3 1/4'' x 7'' (dark pink solid)
Fabric B: 2 strips 3 1/4'' x 7'' (stripes)
Fabric C: 1 square 3 1/4'' x 3 1/4'' (feature print)
Fabric D: 2 squares 7 1/4'' x 7 1/4'' (red solid)

Instructions

This block is a 9 patch set on point with setting triangles.  Use starch or starch alternative when ironing your strips and squares to lessen distortion sometimes caused when sewing bias edges.

1.  Cut the 2 red 7 1/4'' x 7 1/4'' squares (Fabric D) in half along the diagonal; you will have 4 half square triangles.  Cut 1 of the dark pink fabric strips into (2) 3 1/4'' squares (Fabric A).  Set aside.

2. Sew the three remaining 3 1/4'' x 7'' strips as shown below: Fabric A-Fabric B-Fabric A. Press seams.

3. Cut the pieced strip into 2 pieces measuring  3 1/4'' x 8 3/4''.

4. Cut remaining pink strip (Fabric A) into 2 squares 3 1/4'' x 3 1/4''. Sew 3 remaining squares together: Fabric A-Fabric C-Fabric A. Press seams.

4. Pin at seams and sew 3 pieced strips together. Press.

5. Set 9 patch on point. Center 1 setting triangle (Fabric D) on edge of 9 patch, pin, and sew. Center opposite setting triangle, pin, and sew. Repeat for remaining 2 triangles. Press carefully.  Note: Do not stretch or distort the fabric as you sew or press.

6. Trim block to 12.5'' square.

7. Add your block to the Sew Red for Women flickr group!  Happy sewing.

Different fabric choices, randomizing setting triangles, or including corner triangles will change the look of the block.  I'm working on a Spring Cross Roads quilt right now--check out the blocks here and here.

If you would like to make this block or any of the others,  Burgundy Buttons is selling fabric packs that conveniently contain the fabric needed to make each block. Fabrics used are from Chemistry by Cosmo Cricket + Moda solids.

To celebrate the third block, the gals over at Sweetwater have generously donated a really cute pink heart charm to one lucky winner.  Head on over to Sew Red For Women for details on how to win!
