Happy Monday morning! Thanks for joining me for the first day of

Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks blog tour It is my first time seeing my name in print, at least in a quilting setting, but don't you worry, I have my family to keep me humble.  As one example, my 5 year old and I looked through the magazine together--when I showed him my block he said, "That's yours? Really? Uh, it's nice. But I like the houses and the dragon better." At least he is honest :)

For the block in the magazine, I used a text print from Sweetwater's Hometown, a DS Quilts print from Joann's, and Kona coal.  For the block below, I used a Pure Elements solid and 3 prints from Heather Ross' Mendocino collection.

My block is called Old Town Star (#448 on page 47). It is a pretty traditional block--half square triangles, rectangles, and squares.  When I make individual blocks, I try to think about value even more than color. If there isn't enough contrast between the fabrics, the block gets kind of lost. One tip? Take a photo and then change it to black and white. It really helps to determine if the value differences are "right."

Be sure to check out Quiltmaker's Blog, Quilty Pleasures, for more prizes and blog hop participants! The Blog Hop runs April 30-May 4.In addition, Quiltmaker is giving away a copy of 100 Blocks to one of my readers--please leave a comment, and include the name of your favorite book (quilting or otherwise) if you would like. I'm looking for something new to read! [If your email address isn't linked to your profile, please leave a way to contact you if you are chosen by random.org.]I will also send the winner a nice stack of scraps left over from one of my favorite quilts, Streetscape in Triangles (below).
