Sweet Celebrations Book Blog Hop

Today is my stop on the Blog Hop for Sweet Celebrations with the Moda Bake Shop Chefs. This time last year, I was scrambling to complete my Halloween & Fall themed projects for the book--a fun table runner, placemat, and little trick or treat bag. I have learned so much in the last year, and I'm so happy to have contributed to such a fun book. I love celebrating holidays with family, but don't get as into the holiday decorating as my kids might like. I'm excited to get my own copy of the book and be inspired to be a bit more festive.

I get to give away a copy of the book and a favorite Moda precut, so be sure to keep reading.

1. What is your favorite Halloween memory?
I loved dressing up for Halloween--my mom made quite a few of my costumes growing up. I remember loving a crazy clown getup most of all. I was 7 or 8, and my brother and sister had coordinating clown costumes, complete with face paint and wigs. It was pretty awesome.

2. Do you prefer to celebrate with cupcakes, cake pops, or plain old cake?
If it is super duper chocolate-y, it makes the cut. We usually splurge on my birthday and buy Neil's Hat Trick from local bakery CakeLove--a white and dark chocolate layer cake with vanilla buttercream and fresh raspberries.  It is just as good as it sounds.

3. How do you press your seams?

I press my seams to the side, unless it is a block with multiple seams that meet in a point, like the Evening Star from the Summer Sampler Series. I press these open to reduce the bulk--it makes it easier to match the seams/points.

What sewing accomplishment are you most proud of?
I am most proud of the quilts I have made for my kids.  I tend to give away lots/most of what I make (it isn't too late to participate and make a 100 Quilts for Kids quilt for a child in need in your community!)  Last year, I decided I wanted to make more things that stay at my house, and slowly but surely, that is happening.  My mom helped me make this quilt for my son, and this quilt for my daughter (from last year) is a big part of our daily lives.

If you could patchwork bomb a spot in your town, where would you choose and why?

I live about 10 miles from Washington DC. I have always thought that the Lincoln Memorial would be so much cooler if President Lincoln had a quilt on his lap. My friend Heather created this logo for the DC Modern Quilt Guild, and I thought it was just perfect.

As part of the blog hop, I get to share a favorite fall themed recipe. Everyone loves sugar cookies, right? Sugar cookies are a family tradition at our house--I loved digging through my grandma and my mom's cookie cutters, rolling out the dough, frosting the cookies, and especially stealing a few at the end of the afternoon. My kids and I try to make sugar cookies during the major holiday seasons, often inviting others to join us in frosting them (which sometimes goes better than other times). Enjoy this recipe, courtesy of my Aunt Janine.
