Meet the Vintage Revival Quilts: My Sampler Quilt

It's Sampler week in the Meet the Vintage Revival Quilts series. This is the sampler that I made (in record time, I might add). I distinctly remember texting Faith and Lee each time I made a block (all in a few days) and I must have driven them crazy. I also brought these blocks everywhere--I remember cutting fabric while I was also running a Cub Scout Scouting for Food drive. The 9 year old boys thought I was crazy. I think I did too at that point!
Faith shared her sampler quilt last week, and Lee shared hers on Monday--each of us chose different fabric "palettes"--I chose solids, Faith's quilt is scrappy, and Lee used an entire line, Madrona Road by Violet Craft, in her quilt. I think Lee was right in her post that the layouts make more of an impact on how the quilt "feels" than the fabric choices.
I was a little indecisive about using gray or beige, how to put it together, corner stones or not, etc. My advice is either to plan a quilt like this out entirely before making it. Or, if that doesn't work as well for you, give yourself plenty of time to mull over the options!
I quilted this quilt myself on my little Bernina, and I have to thank my mom big time. Not only did she fly out last minute to watch my kids so I could finish my portion of the book, but she also helped guide this particular quilt through a ton of iterations.
I quilted each of the blocks differently, left small portions of the block unquilted, quilted a back and forth design in the smaller, colored border, and stippled the beige borders. I attempted an orange peel/dogwood in each center. I'm kind of surprised even now that I just went for it, but I like how it turned out a lot.
I spray basted the quilt, but it didn't stick very well to the (beautiful) Art Gallery back so I ended up supplementing with pins.
I had to share this picture, it is one of my favorites from that crazy time period. I'm not sure if she was trying to remind me that she was still here, or was being her hilarious little stuff. Either way, I love it!
I am really happy with how this quilt came out, and I mention in the book that if you make a ton of blocks and they aren't all *exactly* 12.5'' square, this method of sashing goes a long way towards hiding the little imperfections.
