Vintage Quilt SundaysI'm so happy to be sharing this beautiful family heirloom quilt by Verna Rebecca Birchell today.  A high school friend, Heather Steadman Ashby, saw my Facebook call for beautiful quilts and/or beautiful stories, and sent me pictures of this quilt made by her Great Grandmother, which is in her possession (lucky girl!)Grama BirchellHere is Heather's story:

My Great Grandma Birchell was the mother of 10 children.  She was a strong intelligent woman and in 1930, when her youngest turned 9 years old, she decided to go to college.  She majored in Theology.  Half way through her Bachelor's degree she became pregnant with her 10th child--she was 48 years old at the time.
She gave birth to my grandmother, Vida Birchell, in 1934 and still went on to complete her degree.  Her husband passed away 5 years later so she became a Pentecostal minister to support her family.  She preached up and down the state of California.  She then started her own church in downtown LA which became very popular.

Heather's Grandma kept the quilt for all of those years, and then passed it to Heather last year.

I love the quilting on this quilt! It adds such a unique twist to the popular log cabin quilt.  She also kept each center of the log cabin quilt the same color, which ties the whole thing together, I think. And don't you love the 30's fabric? So bright and cheery.
A beautiful quilt from an inspiring woman. Thanks SO MUCH for sharing, Heather!

If you have sent me pictures of quilts and stories, thank you so much! I am working on a schedule that I will post next Sunday, and will hopefully have emailed it to each of you before then. I apologize for delays in responses, I have been away from my computer for most of the holidays!

Vintage Quilt Pinterest BoardI am looking for quilts that are beautiful, quilts that have great stories, quilts that are funky or fun, quilts that are unique, quilts that were made by your great great grandmother--basically, great vintage quilts. I will be posting on Sundays, and once a month I plan to post a block tutorial based on one of the vintage quilts featured here.
