The "Picnic" Quilt // Vintage Quilt Sunday

Picnic Quilt
Today's beautiful quilt was shared by Jennifer Barnes, who says this about the quilt:
This one belonged to my husband's aunt. It is said that it was made in the early 1900s by his aunt's mother, Ethel Bull Daniel. She was from Illinois, and made it for her own wedding trousseau. Ethel passed away (during childbirth with her third child)  and her husband, Grandpa Daniel, moved to Oregon with the three children. He subsequently remarried. (They had a daughter--my mother-in-law.) The story in the family is  that this quilt was downgraded to picnic blanket after the second wedding!
Picnic Quilt Detail
And what a beautiful picnic blanket! I couldn't get over how contemporary this one looks--fabric choice, fabric placement, even down to the red anchors and the blue print. I'm glad this quilt continued to be used, even if perhaps not in the way the maker intended.

Interested in Sharing a Vintage Quilt?

Vintage Quilt Pinterest BoardI am looking for quilts that are beautiful, quilts that have great stories, quilts that are funky or fun, quilts that are unique, quilts that were made by your great great grandmother--basically, great vintage quilts. I will be posting on Sundays, and once a month I plan to post a block tutorial based on one of the vintage quilts featured here.
