Cannon Beach // The Great Outdoors

Cannon Beach

When we moved to Oregon on July 1, we followed the advice of smart friends, and we spent a week “on vacation,” playing tourist, before my husband started his job. I feel like this really helped our kids have a positive first impression of Portland–after hitting the Oregon Zoo, multiple parks and downtown fountains (Sellwood Park and Keller Fountain Park are definitely favorites), the Portland Aerial Tram, etc., its hard not to be happy! I stayed behind for most of the adventures, but have since ventured out just a bit more.

One of our favorite places is Cannon Beach. The Oregon Coast isn’t known for its balmy temperatures, either air or water, but if you bring a sweatshirt, its a beautiful place!

Cannon Beach rocks

We have actually been three times–when you have nothing to do and no friends to do it with, plus drive a hybrid, an hour and a half drive to the beach is no big deal!  On our last trip, amazingly, the sun was shining, there was not a cloud in the sky, the tide pools were teeming with life, and the pictures were unedited. It was beautiful.

A bit of sand and sun and surf is good for the soul, even if you just sit on a beach chair the entire afternoon!

I moved to Portland three years ago and I am still playing tourist. Great, isn’t it? I imagine you have found Portland Modern Quilt Guild. (I’ve been out of town for the last couple meetings, so wouldn’t know if you were there.)

It is definitely fun to have so many new places to explore. I made it to the guild’s summer picnic. Wow! There are a ton of members. Looking forward to getting to know some people…

Welcome to Oregon. FYI: The views along 101 just north of Manzanita (12 miles south of Cannon Beach) are spectacular. The beach is one of my favorite Oregon places too.

Cannon Beach is my favorite place, too, but it’s an 11-hour drive for us. Enjoy it all! Did you find the quilt shop there?

Hi Katie – Welcome to the West Coast!! I live just up the road from Portland – about 2 1/2 hours northwest on the coast of Washington – Aberdeen, to be precise. Your “tourist week” when you first came to Ptld was inspired. Another great gal and blogger is Cath at wombatquilts.com, and she’s in Ptld, too. She’s an Aussie transplant, loads of fun, and makes great stuff. When you’re feeling better and more settled, she might be someone to connect up with. Love your work and your blog. Hang in there!
