Improv Coin Quilt // Finished Quilts

San Diego Coins Quilt.jpg

My sister Em and her husband had a baby boy back in April. I knew that I wanted to make my new nephew a quilt, and had plenty of notice to get it done. Amazingly, I finished binding the quilt (sick in bed, awesome) just before her sweet baby was born. I got to spend some time with them last week, and he is such a smiley little guy! Love him.Last year, I had planned to make a scrappy trip along quilt, and cut strips with gusto!! The scrappy trip turned into my Day Trip Quilt, which was given to my friend Dana and her sweet little girl last year, who coincidentally is one of my favorites!

I had a ton of strips left, and thought these would be perfect for baby O.I knew I wanted to make a Coin Quilt based on one I had seen in January at  the Workt by Hand: Hidden Labor & Historical Quilts exhibit from the National Museum of Women in the Arts.I cut up a bunch of low volume fabrics, mainly from Architextures and Botanics by Carolyn Friedlander, as well as some great dots, cross hatches, and the fun Bridgetown print from Violet Craft's Waterfront Park.

Then, I arranged them in every possible configuration. Seriously, Faith, Lee, Dana and Tricia must have been so sick of my texts, "what about this arrangement? is this better?" I was grateful for my design wall, and settled on a mix of prints and low volumes that I think works.

I stippled this quilt, and had a bit of fun with the back and the bright orange binding. I should have ironed the quilt before photos, but hey. I got photos before sending it off! Success!  It makes me happy to see photos of my nephew on the quilt, and I'm glad they liked it!
