21 Blocks Summer Sampler 2016 // Finished Modern Quilts

Today is the day! I honestly can't believe that we have spent the last 20+ weeks making blocks for what turned out to be a really fun Summer Sampler quilt along. Today, Faith, Lee and I are each sharing three different layouts for your blocks. Thank you to everyone who designed blocks, bought the pattern, sewed along (and for those who plan to make the quilt in the future), and who commented here and on Instagram.

One of the best parts of the quilt along was the Facebook group--it was so great to see blocks, hear advice, and cheer and be cheered along.[p.s. thanks to my husband and brother and sister-in-law @dmcstudios, who helped hold the quilt and took some of the pictures. Do you know how hard it is to get a flat shot of a 85'' square quilt?!]

This is my finished quilt! I named it "21 Blocks" because I know everyone wants to make just *one* more block. I made a second Diamond Ladder block (designed by Faith) because it looks a bit different when placed on end.

You can make any 12-1/2'' block you want--if you need some inspiration, there are 12 (free!) block patterns available as part of the original Summer Sampler Series.I quilted this in straight-ish vertical lines, about 1/2''-3/4'' apart. It took for-ev-er but really adds to the quilt design, I think.

The quilt finishes at about 85'' square, big enough to cuddle in or use as a nap quilt. It also fits well on a twin bed as a slightly over-sized twin quilt.I used a 108'' wide quilt back I had in my sewing room (they are my FAVORITE for big quilts!) for the back. It is made by Robert Kaufman and comes in a few colors.

My very favorite are the Carolyn Friedlander Widescreen quilt backs. I have backed quilt a few quilts in these! I ended up choosing white for the binding, and used my machine binding tutorial. Saved a ton of time, it is very sturdy, and I like the way it looks! Thanks for quilting and coming along on this Summer Sampler journey! And thanks to Faith and Lee for being the best quilting partners a girl could ask for, and for the contributing designers, listed below!
