Alchemy // Block #5 // Summer Sampler 2017

It is Monday, which means it is Summer Sampler 2017 time!

This is Block #5, Alchemy, designed by AnneMarie Chany of Gen X Quilters.  I love the versatility of this block--you could use any number of fabric combinations and fabric placements, and come up with something totally different.  I also learned a new-to-me stitch and flip construction, so the aqua points are actually diamonds, and not flying geese.  Cool.

Why doesn't my block coloring follow the model?  Funny/not funny story about this block--I have a bin of Anna Maria Horner fabric--some tiny scraps, some yardage, and everything in between, from a number of lines, stretching back to when I first started sewing, and her Garden Party and Good Folks lines. I found *exactly* enough of this great light orange print from Innocent Crush, and I carefully cut out my pieces.Somehow, I left the cut piece for the center square (which is now bright coral/orange) folded on my cutting table, and didn't realize it. I cut some fabric on top of it (what! how? the horror!) and cut the folded piece in two, leaving no way to repair it because of angle of the cut on the fold.

I auditioned about 20 center fabrics before I finally found one that I liked. I don't usually work with such involved prints, and I have found it challenging. Its good to be challenged every once in a while.Any tips for working with involved prints?Interested in joining in the fun? It isn't too late!
