Introducing my new quilt pattern, Under the Trees Quilt.

I love the many variations you can make, and this simple to piece quilt pattern allows for a lot of color play.  Use prints, solids, scraps, or your favorite fabric bundle to make a one of a kind quilt, perfect for a picnic under the trees, or snuggling on your couch.

This pattern includes yardage suggestions and cutting instructions for quilts in lots of sizes: baby quilt, lap quilt, twin/throw [full instructions are to make a 77'' x 97'' quilt—people are tall in my family], queen, and king size quilt.

Earlier this year, I pulled out my “vintage” Cotton and Steel fabric, and was determined to make a quilt with the beautiful stack. In 2015, I participated in a layer cake swap, where each person bought a few yards of an assigned print, cut it into 10’’ x 10’’ squares, sent it to a central person, and that person sent a completed layer cake to each participant. It seems like a ridiculous amount of effort right now, but people were really excited about the new Cotton and Steel company, now Ruby Star Society for Moda.

I knew I wanted to make a large quilt, and I wanted it to be patchwork-y, without just using squares.

I also knew that I had 10x10 pieces of fabric to work with.I grabbed this great Riley Blake polka dot you can see below (I had quite a bit, but not enough, it turns out), and started pairing it with my layer cake pieces. I pulled any cotton and steel that I had, and started chopping that up too. I grabbed all of my “low volume” fabric, leftover from several products, and kept going.

I just love how fast this quilt goes together, how easy it is to use scraps (YES!) and the chaos within limits.

My Under the Trees quilt was quilted by Abby Latimer in the Target edge to edge pattern, and backed with 108’’ wide Robert Kaufman Essex—I can’t remember which one! So soft and dreamy.

I sent this quilt to my sister and her family—I spent the summer working on it just for them and it makes me so happy when she texts me little notes about how much she uses it.
