Marine Star // Block #6 // Summer Sampler 2017

Happy Monday! Today's Summer Sampler 2017 block is called Marine Star.  I like this block so much, I made it in 2 sizes.  I have always loved Mariner's Compass quilts--the intricacies and shapes can be stunning. I don't see myself making an entire Mariner's Compass quilt in the near future, so I wanted to include a simple "inspired by" compass-style block in the Summer Sampler.

This block can look pretty different, based on your fabric choices and placement, and I have included a few photos and mockups here for inspiration.  [Purchase the Summer Sampler here]

Because I was curious, I made this paper pieced version (6") without the center white square. Instead, I just cut the two green pieces (3A and 3B) a little longer, and didn't use a 4A or 4B white square.  As a reminder, when you paper piece, it is always important to trim correctly, pin and line up seams accurately, and take your time. With this quilt block, it might even be more important (see that center square? It is a little bit tricky.)  If you are concerned about accuracy, or even like the look better, this block coloring might be for you!

I love this block with a white center and blue star points--it looks completely different in two colors (or even 3), doesn't it? The original mockup is beautiful, and I really like the effect when you split the 4 "main" star points into 2 colors, each.  Or, you could split the "background" star prints, in coral below.I like the ninja star effect with the purple star block.A rainbow effect would also be fantastic--you have 16 individual half-star points to play with! In my blocks, I switched the value around--instead of the darker color (cerise in the photo above), I chose to use yellow for the background star.
