Last summer, during the Summer Sampler 2020, Faith, Lee and I wanted to do something to help fund organizations who were doing the work. We donated all of the proceeds for 2 days of Summer Sampler purchases, and made plans for a Summer Sampler Black Lives Matter Quilt. We reached out to past and present Summer Sampler Designers, and invited them to make a block for the quilt. 18 designers made 20 blocks, and we saved the quilt auction for Black History Month.
The quilt auction will last 10 days—please share the link with your friends and family members and social media networks!
The Social Justice Sewing Academy has a brand new resource, the An Anti-Racism Guidebook, which is available on their website for free. The Handbook has a variety of articles, some related to sewing, including my section on Political and Statement Quilts and Cheryl Arkison’s section on the History of Cotton. Other sections include Racial Segregation and Wealth Inequality by Shani Evans and How Racism Affects Public Health Outcomes by Jenny Brooks. Download it, engage with it, learn from it.
The back of the quilt includes 4 blocks in a line with gray solid and Doe Wide (108’’) by Carolyn Friedlander, with black binding.

I wanted to include some process shots—quilts are a labor of time, money, and love. The gray setting blocks are a warmer gray, and the diamonds are a black Lizzy House Constellations print.
