Block #1: Autumn Leaves for the 2022 Summer Quilt Along

The Quilt Along has finally started! I’ve been working on all of the details since March, and it is great to finally release the first block today. I chose this block as the first block for a reason—if you haven’t paper pieced before, this is a great one to get you started. Template A is FPP; Template B is a single piece of fabric. That way, you don’t have to match seams/fabrics between the two templates. I made a short video as I was making the block that will help if you are new to paper piecing. I have made a few short tricks/tips videos for a few of the upcoming blocks, but this will be the only “full” video.

Spend the summer making a choose your own adventure sampler quilt! This beginner-friendly sampler pattern features 9 different block designs—make the quilt as shown [2 options!] or create your own 13 block quilt.

Note: Faith Jones, Lee Heinrich and I are not hosting the Summer Sampler this year. This quilt along will be run similarly to the Summer Sampler.

Enjoy easy-to-follow instructions and helpful hints every step of the way. This year, former Summer Sampler designers will be sharing tips throughout the quilt along, on everything from choosing fabrics, to basting quilts, to paper piecing hacks to make your life easier!

3 half yards
1 yard (black or navy)
4-½ yards (background) for 60’’ x 60’’ quilt; 6 yards for 60’’ x 84’’ quilt
5/8 yard binding
3-1/2 yard backing [for the smaller quilt]; 5-1/4 yards backing [for the larger quilt]
