Observatory: A 2021 Block of the Month Quilt Along
This beginner-friendly sampler pattern features 12 different block designs and is suitable for all skill levels.
I am so happy to announce my 2021 Block of the Month Quilt Along: the Observatory BOM. This Block of the Month will start on Monday, January 4 (but you can start a week or two later if waiting for fabric, need to recover from the holidays, etc.)
This fun block-within-a-block pattern offers oversized star blocks created with a variety of triangles and squares building blocks. There is no paper piecing required, although there will be a paper piecing option for one of the building blocks.
This quilt along is suitable for everyone from “confident beginners” to experienced quilters.
A link to download a new block pattern will be emailed to you on the first Monday of each month of 2021, beginning January 4, 2021.
For a one-time fee of $24.99, the block of the month includes:
• 12 beautiful and unique block patterns measuring 16-1/2'' x 16-1/2" (unfinished)
• Complete finishing instructions to make a 64'' x 84'' quilt
• Fabric requirements, including suggested Kona Solids colors
• Access to a private Facebook group where you can ask questions, get advice, learn helpful tips, and connect with other quilters
Please note that this pattern is available only as a downloadable PDF. You will receive a link to download the PDF Welcome Guide, with fabric requirements, an FAQ, coloring pages, and more, upon purchase.
Fabric requirements for this quilt: 1/4 or fat quarter of each of 6 colorful solids, 1-3/4 yards of a teal solid, and 5-1/3 yards white fabric. More detailed information is available in the Pattern Guide PDF.

This BOM would make an awesome rainbow quilt, especially using one of the V and Co ombre collections (Moda). I would recommend a FQ to Half Yard ombre fabric for each star. A note: The quilt pattern won’t be specifically written for the ombre fabrics, but it wouldn’t be too hard to substitute ombre fabric.
Note: Lee Heinrich’s Perfect HSTs would be a great addition to the Observatory Block of the Month Quilt Along—there is a coupon in the Welcome Guide. The pattern won’t be written specifically for using the perfect HSTs. The template purchase includes a chart to help you translate fabric requirements and cutting sizes. Primarily, the Observatory BOM pattern will use the 4-1/2’’ and 2-1/2’’ paper piecing templates. The templates come in a downloadable PDF format that you print onto paper and use as you are sewing the half-square triangles
