A Mother's Day Quilt // Finished Modern Quilt
My three year old asked me the other day, "How come you are so lucky to have two moms but I only have one mom?" I told him when he grew up and got married, he would have another mom, too. :) I'm incredibly fortunate to have a mother who loves me unconditionally, who cheers me on and is proud of me and lends a listening ear when I need one. A mom who drops everything to come rescue me when I am sick and pregnant, who potty trains my son (I know, awesome, right?), stays up late talking and laughing and playing games and doing projects, and encourages me to be my best self. A mom who loves my husband like a son and loves my children as much as is humanly possible. And then more. :) I'm likewise incredibly blessed to have a mother-in-law who is a patient teacher, who cares deeply for her family, who drops everything to rush to the aid of children in need, sometimes for quite extended periods of time. A mother who takes pleasure in the little things, who stays up way too late to sew and laugh and talk, and who generously welcomes not only me, but those I love into her home. I am blessed to have incredible women in my life, some who are mothers, some who are sisters, and some who are sisters in spirit. A happy day to all. 
We sent this quilt to my mother-in-law for Mother's Day. A few years ago, she taught a two part quilting class for myself and a few friends. Three of those friends have gone on to make multiple quilts this year! My sister just finished her first quilt! We wish Grandma J was here to quilt with us! I chose fabrics I thought she would like, and paired it with a design that I would like. :) I enjoyed making it, am thrilled (and relieved) it is done, and should have ironed it (or something) before sending it to her! Lesson Learned: If you are working with half square triangles, make them a bit bigger than you want your finished block to be. That way you can trim them up before you sew the next bunch together. It is almost impossible (at least for me!) to sew them as perfectly as they need to be sewn. As a neighbor and quilter extraordinaire puts it, there are lots of "skill building" portions of this quilt. :)
