This week's Summer Sampler block was designed by Lee Heinrich.   Lee took a trip to China in 2005, and one of her stops was the Leifing Pagoda in Hangzhou, China. I love how she reinterpreted stunning Chinese architecture  to create this quilt block design. One of my favorite things about the Summer Sampler, and this year in particular, is that we have so many original blocks--you won't find these designs anywhere else! So good. You can see all of my Summer Sampler blocks and quilts here.

This is my take on the Pagoda block. I had to laugh when I was making it--I'm following [loosely] the rainbow ombre mockup that Faith put together for us. I'm using stash fabric, instead of the Cotton and Steel Ombre fabrics, because, I have enough fabric! Use that fabric! I digress.

Anyway, I have to be creative sometimes on my colors, and after I made this block, I took one look at it and said, "squeeze play!" We attended a lot of junior high baseball games this summer, and every once in a while, our team would run a bunt/squeeze play to advance the runner. This block reminds me of that. I don't love my version by itself, maybe because I don't love the color yellow, but it looks great with the rest of the blocks, and I think will really help pull this quilt together! So there you have it. Baseball and sewing.
