I use Bloc-Loc rulers whenever I make half square triangles. They are a little pricey, and I’ve had my current set for 8 years. I think they are so easy to use—they have a groove that “locks” onto your seam allowance (you press your seams to one side) and makes trimming super fast—you can easily trim HSTs while you are watching a new show (or listening to a six year old tell you all about her school day, in great detail). I have bought them at local quilt shops and on Amazon, directly from Bloc-Loc. I used the 4-1/2’’ ruler to make these HST units.
The original 2011 quilt along was based on blocks that we found in Barbara Brackman’s Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns, which soon after became almost impossible to find. Good news: if you are interested in Brackman’s Encyclopedia, which included 4,000+ blocks, you can find an updated version here.
